Foyer Saint Georges

Founded In 1874

Overview

The “Foyer Saint George” (FSG), a non-profit organization owned by the Orthodox Archdiocese of Beirut, established in 1874 by a small group of young volunteers who extended a helping hand to members of their community. Thirty-seven years later, in 1911, the founders expanded their humanitarian support to the homeless elderly. This became the Foyer’s main scope of action for almost a century now.

The existing home is made up of 30 rooms with a 70-bed capacity. The Foyer Saint George is committed to providing the best quality of medical, nursing and social care services to the elderly population. Peace and dignity are at the chore of the Foyer that strives to provide a safe, comfortable and efficient environment to its elderly.

After Beirut Blast, many renovation and remodeling works were implanted in Foyer Saint Georges. Our idea of generating new spaces to address the evolving needs of elders as they expand, and to target a wider group that may benefit from this innovative atmosphere, was born.

The Project aims to improve human life, create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities for elderly, to create the tools and develop the solutions for adaptive and inclusive spaces that dynamically adapt to emotional, aesthetical and societal responses of end users, creating functionally and emotionally appealing architectural design.

The design of space, on architectural and urban scales has been shown to significantly affect the emotional, cognitive wellbeing of individuals, and to influence the functionality and effectiveness of indoors and outdoors spaces in manners that have often been overlooked in the past. In recent years, advances in cognitive science, in sensing technologies and in the arts and creative industries have been paving the way for deeper understanding of the effects of environments on individuals’ wellbeing and behavior.
